“Trail To The Birkie” is a 4-part series by the New Moon team that features some our favorite everyday athletes from the local community talking about their journey to compete in what some call the Greatest Show on Snow! At New Moon, we are a family of dedicated and passionate cross country skiers located in Hayward, Wisconsin, home of the Slumberland American Birkebeiner—the “Birkie.” We began serving the Nordic skiing community back in 1976 alongside the fledgling but growing Birkie ski race. Over the years we have watched many of our customers and our families grow up with and experience Birkie Fever—many for the first time and others for more than 25 years. We highlight a beginning Birkie skier, a mom challenging herself in the Kortelopet, an elite classic style skier, and a skier who has evolved from top age-grouper to proud father skiing with his family and the next generation of Birkie competitors.
First up is Ashley Shuman, local mom and area silent sports enthusiast. Her story will inspire you to try new things and follow your path to help others, no matter where you are in life’s journey.
