New Moon Runs the Birkie

Obviously, we here at New Moon love the American Birkebeiner and all the snowy ski events, we ride in the Fat Bike Birkie, and we hike on the Birkie Trail all year long. But the Birkie puts on another event called the Birkie Trail Run Festival that New Moon employees have not been as active in as some of the others.

While we are huge supporters of the Trail Run and are part of the expo at Birkie Ridge and even volunteer for some of the eight runs/treks on that day, New Moon has been underrepresented in the participant category. Well, that came to an end this weekend when the Hayward Herringbones, New Moon’s 6-person team for the Marathon Relay, competed on that chilly morning (overnight lows dropped to 26 degrees!) and cemented our place in Birkie Marathon Relay History (ok, not really, but everyone had a fun time). Continue below to find out how the day went from Ian, one of the runners.

If you see some of us gimping around the shop for the next day or so, it’s because we are still recovering from running our legs off at this past weekend’s Birkie Trail Run. Several of us kinda-not-really-runners banded together as the Hayward Herringbones, to field a team in the 6-person Marathon Relay. Joel (tricked) convinced us all that this would be a fun time, and he wasn’t wrong! While we didn’t quite know what to expect, we ran well and finished 3rd out of 32 teams, winning the Men’s Open Division (out of 1 team). Even though we’re groaning a bit, it was well worth it. The atmosphere surrounding the event was extremely positive and energetic, with just the right amount of crazy. We’re hooked, and will plan to be back next year to try and catch those lightning fast Seeley Striders!
